La enfermera escolar en España y, en concreto, en la Comunidad de Madrid, incluso siendo un perfil que puede ser considerado todavía como emergente, lleva más de tres décadas ejerciendo su labor con niños y jóvenes, inicialmente en Centros de Educación Especial y, posteriormente, y tras sucesivas legislaciones al respecto, en Escuelas Infantiles, Colegios de Infantil, Primaria y Secundaria, tanto públicos como privados y concertados. La enfermera en los centros educativos, integrada en la comunidad educativa, es un valor añadido, eficaz y eficiente que junto con el equipo docente, trabaja para normalizar la vida diaria del niño con necesidades educativas especiales y enfermedades crónicas y fomentan hábitos de vida saludables en toda la población escolar y comunidad educativa.
El presente artículo, centrado en los antecedentes históricos y la situación actual de la enfermera escolar, da inicio a una serie de nueve artículos en los que se abordarán distintos temas para dar a conocer el perfil emergente de los profesionales enfermeros en el ámbito educativo.

The school nurse figure in Spain and in particular in the Community of Madrid, despite the fact that the profile can still be considered as emerging, has been in place for more than three decades doing work with children and young people, initially in special education centers, and later and after a series of laws in this regard, day care centers, kindergarten, primary and secondary schools, both public and private and state-supported. The nurse in educational centers, as part of the educational community, is regarded as added value, effective and efficient, who, together with the teaching team, works to normalize the daily life of children with special educational needs and chronic diseases and promote healthy lifestyles throughout the school population and school community.
This article focuses on the historical background and current status of the school nurse, and is the first of a series of nine articles that will address various topics to raise awareness of the emerging profile of nurses in the educational field.
