La CIE-10 define la discapacidad intelectual como un desarrollo mental incompleto o detenido, caracterizado principalmente por el deterioro de las funciones concretas de cada época del desarrollo. La sexualidad, sin embargo, es una parte inherente a todo ser humano, por tanto, también para los discapacitados intelectuales.
El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar el nivel de conocimiento que poseen las personas con discapacidad intelectual que residen o acuden de manera frecuente a algún tipo de institución, ya sea residencia o centros ocupacionales de Guadalajara. Para ello se realizó un estudio de diseño descriptivo, transversal y prospectivo, de metodología cuantitativa, realizado entre los meses de octubre de 2014 y Mayo del 2015, a una muestra de 60 personas diagnosticadas con discapacidad intelectual.
Los resultados obtenidos muestran el relativo bajo porcentaje de la muestra estudiada que ha recibido algún tipo de educación sexual. Asimismo, pone de manifiesto cómo la familia es el principal medio de información al que acuden ante una duda sobre sexualidad, así como el nivel de conocimientos que poseen con respecto a diferentes aspectos de la sexualidad, tanto a nivel anatómico humano, como el conocimiento que poseen sobre los métodos anticonceptivos, siendo prácticamente 3 de cada 4 personas las que los conocen. Sin embargo, un gran porcentaje posee ideas erróneas sobre ellos, o el significado de las Enfermedades de Transmisión Sexual, siendo la más conocida, el SIDA.
En conclusión, las aportaciones ofrecidas por los participantes del presente estudio revelan la necesidad de aportar una educación sexual de calidad a los discapacitados intelectuales, adaptada a sus necesidades, para adquirir una línea más responsable con respecto a la sexualidad, eliminando los prejuicios que les impiden vivirla plenamente y reducir el riesgo así, de ser víctimas de abusos y agresiones sexuales

The CIE-10 defines intellectual disability as an incomplete or stopped mental development, characterized primarily by the deterioration of the specific functions from each developmental season. Sexuality, however, is an inherent part to any human being and, therefore, from the mentally handicapped as well.
The current study had, as an objective, to identify the level of knowledge possessed by the mentally handicapped that live or frequently attend some kind of institution, even if it is a residence or an occupational center of Guadalajara. In order to do this, a study was made, of descriptive, transversal and prospective design, with a quantitative methodology, made between the months of October 2014, and May 2015, to a population of 60 people diagnosed with intellectual disability.
The obtained results show the relatively low percentage of the studied population who had received some type of sexual education. At the same time, it established how their family is the main way of information that they go to with doubts over sexuality, as well as the level of knowledge they possess with respect to different aspects of sexuality, both at an anatomical level, in which the majority posses a capacity of basic differentiation between the bodies of different sex, as at the knowledge they possess over contraceptive methods, being practically 3 out of 4 people who know about it. However, a large percentage has mistaken ideas about them, or the meaning of the Sexually Transmitted Disease, being AIDS the most known one.
In conclusion, the contributions offered by the participants of the current study reveal the necessity of offering a quality sexual education to the mentally handicapped, adapted to their needs, in order to acquire a more responsible line with respect to sexuality, eliminating the prejudices that allow them to live their sexuality to the fullest and reduces the risk, this way, of being victims of sexual abuses and aggressions
