Se entiende por muerte perinatal/intrauterina la muerte del feto a partir de la semana 15 o del neonato hasta los 7 días de vida. A pesar de los avances en los cuidados, la muerte perinatal/intrauterina es un área mundialmente desatendida.
Este trabajo se adentra en la vida de unos padres que han sufrido la pérdida de su hijo antes del nacimiento. El objetivo principal es describir la experiencia vital de unos padres afectados por la muerte intrauterina, y los objetivos específicos detectar los fallos que se produjeron en la atención sanitaria, determinar si el protocolo hospitalario fue el adecuado y establecer una conexión entre la atención y la minimización del duelo.
Se realiza una investigación cualitativa mediante un relato biográfico. Este es obtenido a partir de una entrevista semiestructurada por escrito que se utiliza como medio de entendimiento de la situación de la pareja participante.
Se obtiene la historia de unos padres que perdieron a su hijo a los cuatro meses y medio de embarazo. Vivieron el desenlace con fallos en el protocolo y sin la empatía de los profesionales que trabajaban en el hospital, por lo que al dolor de la pérdida se le añadió la sensación de estar desatendidos.
Se aprecian dificultades por parte del personal sanitario para manejar la situación emocional: adoptan conductas de evitación y excluyen al padre de toda atención. La aplicación del protocolo carece de la inclusión de los padres en la toma de decisiones referidas a su hijo. Se concluye que una buena atención en estos casos puede ayudar a los padres afectados a una mejor iniciación del duelo.

Perinatal or intrauterine death is understood as the death of the fetus from week 15 or from the neonate until 7 days of age. Despite advances in care, perinatal or intrauterine death is a globally disregarded area.
This essay studies thoroughly the lives of parents who have suffered the loss of their child before birth. The main objective is to describe the life experience of parents affected by intrauterine death, and the specific objectives to detect the failures that occurred in health care, determine if the hospital protocol was appropriate and establish a connection between care and minimization of the mourning.
A qualitative research is accomplished through a biographical account. This is obtained from a semi-structured written interview which is used as a means of understanding the situation of the participating couple.
The story of some parents who lost their child at four and a half months of pregnancy is obtained. They lived the outcome with failures in the protocol and without the professionals' empathy who worked in the hospital, thus the pain of the loss was added to the feeling of being unattended.
Some difficulties on the part of health personnel to manage the emotional situation are appreciated: they adopt avoidance behaviors and exclude the father from all attention. The application of the protocol lacks the inclusion of parents in the decision-making process related to their child.
It is concluded that good care in these cases can help the affected parents to a better initiation of grief.
