Summary: Introduction: Spinal manipulations can produce distant effects as they act on the central sensitization process restoring nerve function, and on the autonomic nervous system. Objective: to verify the immediate effects of distant spinal manipulation on a sensitized lumbar segment. Patients and method: this is a case study, longitudinal, quantitative. Three patients with low LBP were studied. Cases 1 and 3 underwent vertebral spinal manipulation and case 2 underwent lumbar manipulation. The variables studied were paravertebral skin temperature (TyTron thermograph©), pain, heart rate and oxygen saturation. Results: A decrease in temperature was observed in all three cases, ranging from 0.51oC to 0.31oC in case 1, 0.30oC and 0.10oC in case 2 and 0.17oC and 0.28oC in case 3. No differences were found between the interventions. Pain decreased by 78% in case 1, 35% in 2 and 100% in 3. There were also variations in heart rate and oxygen saturation. Discussion: The decrease in temperature and pain indicates an effect on the nervous system, although the study presents the limitations of the design itself.Item type | Current library | Collection | Call number | Status | Notes | Date due | Barcode |
