La TEC es un procedimiento para tratar distintos trastornos psiquiátricos, entre ellos la depresión y la esquizofrenia resistentes a tratamiento farmacológico. Son muchos los mitos que rodean a la TEC, la población tiene ideas preconcebidas sobre esta terapia en la mayoría de los casos con connotaciones negativas. OBJETIVOS: El objetivo principal de esta revisión es desestigmatizar la TEC a través de evidencias científicas y comprobar la relación riesgo/beneficio que conlleva. METODO: Se ha realizado esta revisión bibliográfica recopilando información de diferentes artículos hallados en diversas bases de datos. RESULTADOS: La desinformación generalizada es la causa de la inquietud y el miedo ante la TEC. Muchos profesionales y pacientes que han prescrito o han sido subsidiarios de esta terapia han mostrado su conformidad y su gratitud hacia ella, pese a los efectos secundarios que causa. CONCLUSION: La TEC es una terapia eficaz y segura que aunque tenga diversos efectos secundarios, estos al ser temporales producen más beneficio que riesgo. En la actualidad, los nuevos avances que se han realizado en esta terapia principalmente en la parte técnica, abogando por una mayor comodidad del paciente como en la eficacia de sus resultados, hace que cada día más profesionales la prescriban como terapia de elección para aquellos pacientes en los que otras medidas no han tenido éxito |

ECT is a procedure to treat various psychiatric disorders, including depression and schizophrenia resistant to drug treatment. There are many myths surrounding ECT, people have preconceived ideas about this therapy in most cases with negative connotations. OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this review is to unstigmatize the ECT through scientific evidence and to check the risk / benefit involved. METHOD: A literature review has been made to collect information from different items found in various databases. RESULTS: The widespread misinformation is causing anxiety and fear of the ECT. Many professionals and patients who have been prescribed or targeted of this therapy have shown their agreement and gratitude to it, despite of the side effects that it causes. CONCLUSION: ECT is an effective and safe therapy and although it has side effects, these are temporary; therefore receiving this therapy produces more benefits than risks. At present, the new advances that have been made in this therapy, mainly in the technical side, advocating greater patient comfort and the effectiveness of its results, make that more professionals prescribed ECTS as a therapy of choice for those patients in whom other measures have been unsuccessful |
