La Fisioterapia Manual Ortopédica constituye un área de especialización dentro de la Fisioterapia destinada a la evaluación y tratamiento de las disfunciones neuro-músculo-esqueléticas. Está basada en el razonamiento clínico, la evidencia científica y clínica disponible y el abordaje biopsicosocial de cada paciente individual. Utiliza enfoques de evaluación y tratamiento altamente específicos incluidas las técnicas manuales y los ejercicios terapéuticos. Integra toda la información y experiencia de la Terapia Manual aplicada desde la antigüedad, la Fisioterapia Clásica, la Medicina Deportiva, la Medicina Ortopédica, la Osteopatía y la Quiropraxia, aglutinadas bajo un denominador común, la evidencia clínica y científica, para el desarrollo de la especialidad. Tiene su origen en 1813, con los directores gimnásticos del Royal Centrallnstitute of Gymnastics (RCIG) de Estocolmo dirigido por Per Henrik Ling. A mediados del siglo XIX, este instituto se convirtió en un referente mundial para el tratamiento de las diferentes disfunciones tanto agudas como crónicas, y fisioterapeutas y médicos de todo el mundo acudieron a Suecia para formarse en las técnicas y procedimientos de los directores gimnásticos. Las primeras publicaciones no tardaron en aparecer, dotando a la Gimnasia Médica de una fundamentación científica que marcaría su desarrollo posterior. Ya entrado el siglo XX, el hospital St. Thomas de Londres se convirtió en un punto clave para el desarrollo de la Terapia Manual Ortopédica, gracias a los fuertes vínculos con el RCIG sueco. Fisioterapeutas y médicos como J.H. Kellgren, E. Cyriax, J. Mennell y J. Cyriax, entre otros, realizaron enormes contribuciones, desde el punto de vista clínico y científico, al cuerpo de conocimiento de la Terapia Manual Ortopédica. Posteriormente, el director gimnástico y fisioterapeuta Freddy Kaltenborn en los paises del norte de Europa y el fisioterapeuta Geoffrey Maitland en la región australiana llevarían a cabo un proceso de integración de las diferentes las diferentes metodologías y procedimientos de Terapia Manual y colaborarían con otros fisioterapeutas en la formación de una institución oficial, la Federación Internacional de Fisioterapeutas ManualesiManipulativos Ortopédicos (IFOMPT) encargada de velar por la calidad de la formación en Terapia Manual impartida en los diferentes paises. |

Manual Orthopedic Physiotherapy is an area of specialization within Physiotherapy aimed at the evaluation and treatment of neuro-musculoskeletal dysfunctions. It is based on clinical reasoning, available scientific and clinical evidence and the biopsychosocial approach of each individual patient. It uses highly specific evaluation and treatment approaches including manual techniques and therapeutic exercises. It integrates all the information and experience of Manual Therapy applied since ancient times, Classical Physiotherapy, Sports Medicine, Orthopedic Medicine, Osteopathy and Chiropractic, agglutinated under a common denominator, clinical and scientific evidence, for the development of the specialty. It has its origin in 1813, with gymnastic directors of the Royal Center of Gymnastics (RCIG) of Stockholm directed by Per Henrik Ling. In the mid-nineteenth century, this institute became a world reference for the treatment of different acute and chronic dysfunctions, and physiotherapists and doctors from all over the world came to Sweden to train in the techniques and procedures of gymnastic directors. The first publications did not take long to appear, providing Medical Gymnastics with a scientific foundation that would mark its later development. Already entered the twentieth century, St. Thomas Hospital in London became a key point for the development of Manual Orthopedic Therapy, thanks to the strong links with the Swedish RCIG. Physiotherapists and doctors like J.H. Kellgren, E. Cyriax, J. Mennell and J. Cyriax, among others, made enormous contributions, from the clinical and scientific point of view, to the body of knowledge of Orthopedic Manual Therapy. Later, the gymnastic director and physiotherapist Freddy Kaltenborn in the countries of northern Europe and the physiotherapist Geoffrey Maitland in the Australian region would carry out a process of integration of the different methodologies and procedures of Manual Therapy and collaborate with other physiotherapists in the formation of an official institution, the International Federation of Physiotherapists Manipulatives Orthopedic (IFOMPT) responsible for ensuring the quality of training in Manual Therapy given in different countries |
