Objetivo: evaluar la cantidad y el impacto económico que suponen los medicamentos desechados y no consumidos por los pacientes en un Centro de Atención Primaria durante un año.<br/>Material y método: estudio descriptivo transversal de los medicamentos desechados por los usuarios durante un año en el contenedor de reciclaje del Centro de Atención Primaria Serraparera (Cerdanyola del Vallés). Se obtuvo información sobre el número de envases, tipo de medicación, precio e indicación de la misma. <br/>Resultados: el total de cajas desechadas sin haber sido utilizadas fue de 5.228 unidades con un coste global de 67.471,64 euros (11.226.336 ptas). Dentro de esta medicación destacaban con un coste superior a los 6.000 euros, los medicamentos antihipertensivos, los fármacos para el tratamiento de las enfermedades respiratorias y los antidepresivos. Costos más reducidos se observaron en el resto de grupos como los protectores de la mucosa gástrica, hipolipemiantes, antidiabéticos, hormonas, antibióticos, fármacos utilizados en la patología cardiovascular, antiinflamatorios y analgésicos. <br/>Conclusiones: los resultados del presente estudio demuestran la importancia del coste económico que supone los medicamentos desechados por los pacientes sin haber sido utilizados. La extrapolación de estos resultados a una área sanitaria mayor, evidencia la magnitud real del gasto que comporta. Por este motivo, una mejora en la política de prescripción y un control adecuado de los tratamientos farmacológicos parece necesaria. |

Objective: to evaluate the amount and economic impact that disregarded and non consumed drugs represent in a primary care centre during a period of one year.<br/>Material and method: cross-sectional descriptive study of drugs disregarded by the users during one year into the recycling container of the Serraparera primary care centre (Cerdanyola del Vallés). Information was obtained on the number of packages, type of medication, price and indication for the medication.<br/>Results: the total number of disregarded boxes without use was 5.228 units with a total overall cost of 67,471.64 euros (11.226.336 pesetas). Within this medication, the most important ones with a cost above 6.000 euros were high blood pressure medications, drugs for the treatment of respiratory diseases and antidepressants. Lower costs were observed in the other groups such as stomach mucosa protectors, hypolipemiants, antidiabetics, hormones, antibiotics, drugs used in cardiovascular disorders, anti-inflammatory agents and pain killers.<br/>Conclusions: the results yielded by this study show the importance of the economic cost that drugs disregarded by the users without consumption represent. Extrapolation of these results to a larger health area shows the real magnitude of the expense that such practice entails. Because of this, an improvement in the policy for the prescribing of drugs as well as an adequate control of pharmacological treatments appears to be necessary measures. |
