But being stretched is not the only way to get decubitus ulcers: they appear because of a continuous pressure, in some part of the body, that causes vascular occlusion and, consequently, ischemia. It doesn't matter if the individual is sitting, semi-stretched, stretched... These ulcers worry all health personnel and, especially, nursing, since they can be blamed for poor patient care. The damage is known from ancient times - ulcers have even been found on Egyptian mummies - and Florence Nithingale explains how to treat them and prevent their appearance. More modern, an American study-Shell and Wolcott-concluded that one of these ulcers increases the cost of care by five thousand dollars. In 1961, another study-this one by Husain-demonstrated that continuity was more decisive than the importance of pressure to cause an ulcer (gentle and continuous pressure would suffice for periods of a couple of hours). The epidermis -he assured- is capable of withstanding great pressures, if they occur during brief and sufficiently spaced periods. This work tries to select the different references and offer useful information to the nursing staff ER -
