N2  - In this paper, the characteristics and mechanisms of action of folates are discussed, with special emphasis on aspects related to their nutritional importance. Recent studies conclude a possible lack of folates in the diet of developed countries, and especially in certain risk groups, this being a responsible factor, after iron, for the incidence of anemia of nutritional origin. The recommended intakes and data related to the presence of folates in food are also summarized
