N2  - The article that follows was presented in the form of a conference-gathering and slightly expanded, at the International Nursing Seminar <<Being a nurse>>, which took place in March of this year at the University School of Nursing <<Santa Madrona >>, in Barcelona. It covers topics of undeniable importance for this professional group in a conceptual way and in an orderly presentation; all this from an approach that contemplates the nursing profession <<immersed in the health system, imbued with its values ​​and surrounded by all those circumstances that truly determine the dimension of its contribution>>.
The author intends to achieve, with her text, the following objectives:
1) Reflect on the nursing identity and its signs, emphasizing the influence of circumstances as conditions for its development. To speak, therefore, of the nuclear and the circumstantial, of <<being a nurse>> and how both aspects are interrelated.
2) Briefly review the most significant features of the Spanish healthcare system and their implications for the nursing profession.
3) Propose the characteristics that will identify the <<professional being>> (identity) of XXI century nurses, taking into account the scenario in which the profession will have to operate in the near future
