Introducción: En la actualidad el cáncer es una de las enfermedades que mayor mortalidad y morbilidad produce en el mundo. Es tratada mediante procedimientos terapéuticos agresivos que conducen a un deterioro del estado general del paciente, teniendo como consecuencia una disminución de la calidad de vida. Existe actualmente un auge de las terapias complementarias, como el Reiki, como método para paliar y disminuir los síntomas de la enfermedad y secundarios al tratamiento.
Objetivos: El objetivo general del estudio es describir cómo afecta la terapia con Reiki a personas que acuden a una fundación, en tratamiento actual con quimioterapia o radioterapia. Más específicamente se busca la observación de los efectos positivos y negativos que produce el Reiki, así como las experiencias de los terapeutas.
Metodología: Para responder a los objetivos, se ha realizado un estudio cualitativo fenomenológico descriptivo. El estudio ha sido dividido en dos fases, la primera en la que se realizó un grupo de discusión con terapeutas de Reiki y la segunda basada en entrevistas individuales a personas con cáncer y en tratamiento médico junto con el Reiki.
Resultados y conclusiones: Se pueden destacar como resultados del estudio el beneficio producido por el Reiki como terapia complementaria en el paciente oncológico, encontrando principalmente mejorías y beneficios en el ámbito psicológico del mismo. El único efecto negativo del Reiki es el producido por un incumplimiento de las expectativas del paciente. Asimismo, se llega a la conclusión de la vital importancia de un cuidado holístico, integral y humano en los pacientes oncológicos. Por ello, la medicina actual debe ir dirigida hacia una medicina integrativa que mejore y facilite ese cuidado holístico de los pacientes

Introduction: Cancer is among the diseases that causes greater mortality and morbility in the world. It is treated by aggressive therapeutic techniques, which generally causes decay on patient general condition decreasing his welfare. Nowadays there is a tendency on applying complementary techniques, as Reiki, as a way to palliate and decrease the symptoms of the disease and its treatment.
Goals: The main goal of the present study is to describe how Reiki therapy affects cancer patients who go to a foundation, now treated by chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Looking forward to achieve that goal positive and negative Reiki effects as well as the experiences of the therapists were observed.
Methodology: a phenomenological qualitative study was carried out. The study was divided in two phases; the first one was based on a brain storming session with a Reiki therapists group and the second one on individual interviews with cancer patients in treatment receiving Reiki sessions too.
Results and conclusions: Can be highlighted as the main result of the present study the benefits produced by the Reiki as complementary therapy in oncological patients, the improvement of the welfare of the patient is mainly based on a better psychological status. The sole Reiki negative effect detected was the mismatch with patient expectative. Also can be concluded the high importance of a holistic, integral and human care of the oncologic patients. For this reason, current medicine have to be redirected to an integrative medicine focused on improve and ease holistic patient care.
