La presente revisión pretende acercarnos al origen de la creencia en la influencia lunar sobre la biología femenina.
Material y método: Se ha revisado literatura científica, histórica y antropológica hasta octubre de 2009.
Resultados: Se han encontrado seis aspectos que tradicionalmente relacionan la fisiología de la mujer con la luna: la menstruación, el momento de la concepción, la medición del tiempo de embarazo, la protección del parto, el inicio del parto y la protección puerperal.
Conclusiones: Los ritos que relacionan la luna con el ciclo reproductivo se han mantenido a lo largo de los siglos, y han pasado a formar parte del bagaje cultural femenino. Las matronas debemos saber que la influencia lunar sobre el parto y otros aspectos de la biología de las mujeres no tiene una base científica demostrada, pero es una creencia fruto de milenios de culto y, por tanto, difícil de destronar.
Summary: Objective: In spite of scientific demonstration that the moon does not excert influence some in the unleashing of childbirth this myth is very extended geographically and it continues to be transmitted throughout the generations. This historical-anthropological review tries to approach us to the origin of the belief of the lunar influence in the feminine biology.
Material and methods: Scientific, historical and anthropological literature has been reviewed until October 2009.
Results: We have found six aspects that traditionally are linked with the physiology of the woman and the moon: Its relation with menstruation, the moment of conception, the measurement of the time of pregnancy, the protection at the moment of birth, the beginning of the childbirth and the puerperal protection.
Conclusions: The rituals that connect the moon to the reproductive cycle have continued throughout the centuries, and have become part of the feminine cultural heritage. The midwives must know that the lunar influence during childbirth and in other aspects of the biology of the women, does not have any demonstrated scientific base, but is a belief
consequence of millennia of cult, and therefore difficult to overthrow.
