|

Introduction and aims:
Since the middle of the 20th century, horses have been used for rehabilitation and treatment of muscle and skeletal illness, either as a complementary therapy or as an alternative to traditional physiotherapy.
The present essay analyses the effective applicability and benefits of equine-assisted therapy in children with cerebral palsy.

Method
The used method consists of an exhaustive bibliographical review, together with the study and analysis of a real case in Germany.
The bibliographical review was made through systematic consults to several databases and free disposable documentation from Internet, from the inception of the database through to April 2013.
The case analysis was made by the following of the treatment with horseback riding of a 9 years old girl in Germany, who underwent up to 25 sessions under the control of a physiotherapist and after a previous classical physiotherapy treatment .
Results:
All the consulted studies found that postural control and balance were improved during hippotherapy in patients with infantile cerebral palsy. Although the generalization of our findings may be restricted by the relatively small sample size, the results clearly demonstrate that riding therapy is indicated to improve postural control and balance. The observation of the real case also confirms the conclusions of the studies.
|
