Introducción y objetivos:<br/>En la población general las enfermedades cardiovasculares, las patologías respiratorias, la diabetes mellitus y el cáncer son las principales enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles. La importancia de estas<br/>patologías radica en su alta prevalencia a nivel mundial y su alta tasa de mortalidad.<br/>Entre los factores de riesgo que aumentan la posibilidad de padecer estas enfermedades se encuentran la hipercolesterolemia, la hipertensión arterial, la obesidad y el sobrepeso, el hábito enólico y el tabaquismo. En un subgrupo de la población, los internos en centros penitenciarios, se dispone de numerosa información sobre sus enfermedades transmisibles, sus patologías mentales y sus problemas de<br/>drogadicción, pero hay un escaso conocimiento sobre las enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles. Se establece como objetivo del estudio describir la prevalencia de los principales factores de riesgo cardiovascular y de las enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles que presentan los internos del Centro Penitenciario Madrid III, ubicado en el municipio de Valdemoro (Comunidad de Madrid, España).<br/>Material y Método: Estudio observacional descriptivo, de carácter transversal con metodología cuantitativa, a través de un cuestionario de elaboración propia que fue heteroadministrado y que se distribuyó entre los residentes del Centro Penitenciario Madrid III, varones, con edad mínima de 21 años, institucionalizados en régimen ordinario y con un periodo mínimo de estancia de 6 meses.<br/>Resultados: Se obtuvieron un total de 322 cuestionarios válidos, que mostraron que el 78,6% de los participantes no presentaba ninguna enfermedad crónica no transmisible. Sin embargo, su prevalencia en factores de riesgo sí se consideró elevada; así un 64,3% de la muestra consumía tabaco, un 68,3% afirmó consumir alcohol previo al ingreso y un 56% refirió ser consumidor de algún estupefaciente.<br/>Conclusiones: La prevalencia de enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles entre los internos del Centro Penitenciario Madrid III es superior a la de la población general para su mismo rango de edad. De la misma manera, también tienen más conductas perjudiciales para su salud. |

Introduction and Objectives: In the general population, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory pathologies, diabetes mellitus, and cancer are the main non-communicable chronic diseases. The importance of these pathologies lies in their high prevalence worldwide and high mortality rates. Among the risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing these diseases are hypercholesterolemia, arterial hypertension, obesity and overweight, alcohol consumption, and smoking habit. In a subgroup of the population, inmates in prisons, there is abundant information about their communicable diseases, mental illnesses, and drug addiction problems, but there is limited knowledge about non-communicable chronic diseases. The objective of the study is to describe the prevalence of the main cardiovascular risk factors and non-communicable chronic diseases among inmates of Madrid III Penitentiary Center, located in the municipality of Valdemoro (Community of Madrid, Spain).<br/>Material and Methods: Observational descriptive study, of a cross-sectional nature with quantitative methodology, through a self-developed questionnaire that was hetero-administered and distributed among residents of Madrid III Penitentiary Center, males, aged at least 21 years, institutionalized under ordinary regime, and with a minimum period of stay of 6 months.<br/>Results: A total of 322 valid questionnaires were obtained, which showed that 78.6% of the participants did not present any non-communicable chronic disease. However, the prevalence of risk factors was considered high; thus, 64.3% of the sample smoked, 68.3% reported alcohol consumption prior to admission, and 56% stated they were consumers of some type of narcotic.<br/>Conclusions: The prevalence of non-communicable chronic diseases among inmates of Madrid III Penitentiary Center is higher than that of the general population in the same age range. Similarly, they also exhibit more harmful health behaviors. |
