Introducción: Los primeros auxilios son las actuaciones que se realizan inicialmente ante una emergencia médica. El infarto, el accidente cerebrovascular y la hipoglucemia por complicación de la diabetes mellitus, necesitan una atención inmediata.<br/>Objetivo: Describir el conocimiento en primeros auxilios, frente a las principales emergencias médicas de la edad adulta, que poseen las personas a partir de 65 años en la Comunidad de Madrid.<br/>Material y método: Estudio observacional descriptivo con metodología cuantitativa a través de un cuestionario heteroadministrado anónimo, muestreo intencional y consentimiento verbal. El despliegue de los cuestionarios tuvo lugar entre los meses de enero y marzo de 2024. Se recogieron como variables sociodemográficas edad, sexo, nivel de estudios, desarrollo de profesiones del ámbito sanitario y la realización de cursos de primeros auxilios. Se llevó a cabo el análisis de datos con el programa estadístico IBM® SPSS Statistics versión 22.<br/>Resultados: La muestra fue de 44 individuos (72.5 años (RI: 13)) con una distribución por sexos similar. El 31.8% tenía estudios universitarios siendo minoritarios aquellos que carecían de estudios reglados (6.8%). El 84.1% no había desarrollado una profesión sanitaria y el 56.8% había recibido un curso de primeros auxilios. Se consideró importante el conocimiento en primeros auxilios en todas las edades, aunque principalmente en la población de menor edad. Se destacó la importancia de la difusión de este por un profesional sanitario. Algunos participantes presentaron dificultad para reconocer síntomas de hipoglucemia siendo el abordaje de una persona que no muestra signos de vida la actuación peor resuelta teóricamente. Haber desarrollado una profesión sanitaria influyó en la puntuación global.<br/>Conclusión: Los participantes encuestados reconocieron como importante el conocimiento en primeros auxilios, así como su difusión. Los participantes en general reconocen los signos y síntomas de las principales emergencias médicas y son capaces de actuar ante ellos. |

Introduction: First aid refers to the actions taken initially in response to a medical emergency. Conditions such as heart attack, stroke, and hypoglycemia as a complication of diabetes mellitus require immediate attention.<br/>Objective: To describe the knowledge in first aid regarding the main medical emergencies of adulthood possessed by individuals aged 65 and older in the Community of Madrid.<br/>Materials and Methods: Descriptive observational study with quantitative methodology using an anonymously administered hetero questionnaire, intentional sampling, and verbal consent. The distribution of the questionnaires took place between January and March 2024. Sociodemographic variables such as age, gender, level of education, occupation in the healthcare field, and participation in first<br/>aid courses were collected. Data analysis was performed using IBM® SPSS Statistics version 22 statistical software.<br/>Results: The sample consisted of 44 individuals (mean age: 72.5 years (IR: 13)) with a similar distribution by gender. 31.8% had a university education, while those without formal education were in the minority (6.8%). 84.1% had not pursued a healthcare profession, and 56.8% had received first aid training. Knowledge of first aid was considered important across all age groups, with particular emphasis on<br/>younger individuals. The importance of dissemination by a healthcare professional was highlighted. Some participants had difficulty recognizing symptoms of hypoglycemia, and the theoretical approach to managing an unresponsive individual was identified as the least well-resolved action. Having a background in healthcare influenced the overall score.<br/>Conclusion: The surveyed participants recognized the importance of first aid knowledge, as well as its dissemination. Overall, participants recognized the signs and symptoms of major medical emergencies and demonstrated capability in responding to them. |
