Introducción y objetivos: Los cuidados paliativos han ido evolucionando para <br/>adaptarse a las necesidades de la sociedad. La gran necesidad que tiene la población <br/>de recibir estos cuidados está ampliamente descrita, además de ser un derecho, no <br/>obstante muy pocos acceden a ellos. <br/>Material y métodos: Para llevar a cabo los objetivos planteados se realizó un estudio <br/>descriptivo de metodología cualitativa usando como herramienta la entrevista <br/>semiestructurada. <br/>Resultados: Los resultados de los participantes mostraron el conocimiento que <br/>poseían antes y tras entrar en la unidad paliativa del Hospital Fundación Instituto San <br/>José. Expusieron la situación en la que se encontraban antes de entrar en la unidad <br/>y detallaron ampliamente su paso por los cuidados paliativos resaltando diferencias <br/>percibidas respecto a otras unidades hospitalarias, miedos, experiencias , su <br/>percepción sobre los cuidados recibidos así como las ventajas y limitaciones <br/>percibidas. Por último reflejaron cómo habría sido afrontar esta última etapa de la <br/>enfermedad sin los cuidados paliativos. <br/>Conclusiones: El gran desconocimiento incluso tras estar en una unidad paliativa, es <br/>una gran barrera que dificulta el acceso a estos servicios. Asimismo las derivaciones <br/>se realizaron tras certificar un estado muy avanzado de la enfermedad, el cual era <br/>insostenible para la familia y los pacientes. Una vez en la unidad, se percibió un <br/>adecuado control de los síntomas, del manejo del sufrimiento y de la comunicación. <br/>Mediante la atención individualizada y especializada, administrada por el equipo <br/>interdisciplinar, se logró cubrir las necesidades de los familiares y pacientes, además <br/>de facilitar este proceso para que así la despedida fuera lo mejor posible. Tras plantear <br/>afrontar esta última etapa de la enfermedad sin estos cuidados, se certificó la gran <br/>necesidad que tiene los pacientes y la familia de recibirlos y lo importante que son los <br/>cuidados paliativos. |

Introduction and objectives: Palliative care has been evolving to adapt to the <br/>needs of society. The need the population has to receive this kind of care is widely <br/>shown, in addition to being a right. Nevertheless very few people access them. <br/> <br/>Methods and material: To reach the objectives that were planned, a descriptive and <br/>qualitative methodology was carried out using the interview as a semi-structure tool. <br/> <br/>Results: The results from the participants showed the knowledge they had before <br/>entering the palliative unit of the Fundación Instituto San José Hospital and the <br/>knowledge they acquired after being in it. They explained the situation in which they <br/>found themselves before entering the unit and extensively detailed their time in the <br/>palliative care, highlighting the differences perceived with other hospital units, fears, <br/>experiences, their perception over the care received as well as the advantages and <br/>disadvantages noted. Finally, they reflected what would have been like facing the last <br/>stage of the disease without the palliative care. <br/> <br/>Conclusion: The lack of knowledge from the population, even after being in a palliative <br/>unit is a huge barrier that makes it difficult to access these services. Also, the referrals <br/>were made after certifying an advanced state of the disease, which was unsustainable <br/>for the relatives and the patients themselves. Once in the units, an adequate symptom <br/>control, pain management, and good communication were perceived. Through <br/>individualized and specialized attention, which characterizes this service, administered <br/>by the interdisciplinary team, it was possible to cover patients and relative’s needs, <br/>besides facilitating the process so that the farewell was as good as possible. The <br/>consideration to undergo the last stage of the illness without this type of care, certifies <br/>the great need the patients and relatives have to receive it and reflects the importance <br/>of palliative care. |
