Antecedentes y objetivo<br/>La sialorrea es la pérdida no intencional de saliva a través de la cavidad oral que afecta a la calidad de vida de los pacientes. El objetivo del trabajo fue comprobar, conocer y describir la posible utilidad del vendaje neuromuscular en un paciente neurológico con sialorrea.<br/>Descripción del caso<br/>Varón de 54 años con daño cerebral que presentaba sialorrea y disfagia evaluada a través del Swallowing Disturbance Questionnaire, la Generic Scale for Dysphagia-Related Outcomes Quality of Life, la Drooling Rating Scale, la Sialorrhea Clinical Scale for Parkinson's Disease y la Drooling Severity and Frequency Scale.<br/>Intervención<br/>Se aplicó un vendaje neuromuscular sobre la musculatura suprahioidea con el objetivo de estimular el proceso de deglución y así evitar el acúmulo de saliva. Se colocó una tira 5,5 x 2,5cm mediante aplicación con tracción desde los extremos y tensión aproximada del 50%. Se mantuvo la venda adherida 24 h al día durante 4 semanas.<br/>Resultados<br/>La evolución del paciente fue satisfactoria, aumentó 16 puntos en la Generic Scale for Dysphagia-Related Outcomes Quality of Life, redujo 7 puntos en la Swallowing Disturbance Questionnaire y 6 puntos en la Sialorrhea Clinical Scale for Parkinson's Disease y pasó a 0 en la Drooling Rating Scale. El número de veces/semana que mojaba la ropa se redujo de 52 a 18.<br/>Conclusión<br/>En el caso clínico presentado el vendaje neuromuscular reduce la severidad y frecuencia de la sialorrea, por lo que debe contemplarse como una herramienta barata, fácil de aplicar y sin complicaciones en el tratamiento de esta. |

Background and objective<br/>Drooling is the unintentional loss of saliva from the mouth which seriously affects patient quality of life. The aim of this study was to verify, to determine, as well as to describe the possible usefulness of Kinesio Taping in a patient suffering from sialorrhoea.<br/>Patient description<br/>The case concerns a 54 year old male with brain damage and also suffers from sialorrhoea and dysphagia evaluated by the Swallowing Disturbance Questionnaire, Generic Scale for Dysphagia-Related Outcomes Quality of Life, Drooling Rating Scale, Sialorrhoea Clinical Scale for Parkinson's disease, and the Drooling Severity and Frequency Scale.<br/>Intervention<br/>Kinesio Taping method was applied on the suprahyoid muscles in order to stimulate the swallowing process and thus avoid the accumulation of saliva. A 5.5x2.5cm strip was placed by applying traction from the ends until approximately 50% of stretch was obtained. It remained attached 24hours a day for 4 weeks.<br/>Results<br/>Patient outcome was satisfactory, with an increase of 16 points in Generic Scale for Dysphagia-Related Outcomes Quality of Life, a decrease 7 points in Swallowing Disturbance Questionnaire, 6 points in Sialorrhoea Clinical Scale for Parkinson's disease, and 0 in the Drooling Rating Scale. The number of times/week his clothes were damp was reduced from 52 to 18.<br/>Conclusion<br/>In the clinical case presented Kinesio Taping method reduces severity and frequency of sialorrhea and consequently it should be considered as a cheap tool, easy to apply and with no complications in its treatment. |
