Introducción: El propóleo es una materia resinosa que elaboran las abejas, a partir de sustancias exudadas por las yemas de la variada vegetación que visitan. Es conocido desde la antigüedad por sus propiedades medicinales: antibiótico, antibacteriano o antiinflamatorio. Existen estudios científicos que avalan sus propiedades. El objetivo fue describir la efectividad del propóleo en el tratamiento de enfermedades respiratorias, así como los signos y síntomas propios de éstas.<br/>Material y método: Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica a partir de las búsquedas realizadas en las bases de datos PubMed, Scielo, Science Direct, Cuiden, Dialnet, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, BVS, y Academic Search Complete. Se incluyeron aquellos artículos que narraban problemas respiratorios y síntomas de catarro común. <br/>Se seleccionaron los estudios publicados en los últimos cinco años, realizados en humanos, publicados en español, inglés, francés y portugués. Se excluyeron aquellos artículos que no trataban los signos y síntomas respiratorios con propóleo.<br/>Resultados: Se escogieron un total de 6 artículos según los criterios previamente establecidos.<br/>Conclusiones: Incluir el propóleo como tratamiento dio lugar a una resolución más pronta de lo habitual en cuanto a las patologías respiratorias. El propóleo influye positivamente en la curación de la tos, el dolor de garganta, disfonía, producción de mocos en exceso u obstrucción nasal. Ninguno de los estudios refirió eventos adversos al tratamiento con propóleo. |

Introduction: Propolis is a resinous material that bees make from substances exuded by the buds of the varied vegetation they visit. It has been known since ancient times for its medicinal properties: antibiotic, antibacterial or anti-inflammatory. There are <br/>scientific studies that support its properties. The objective was to describe the effectiveness of propolis in the treatment of respiratory diseases, as well as their own signs and symptoms.<br/>Material and method: A bibliographic review was carried out from the searches in the databases PubMed, Scielo, Science Direct, Cuiden, Dialnet, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, BVS, and Academic Search Complete. Those articles that narrated respiratory <br/>problems and symptoms of the common cold were included. Studies published in the last five years, carried out in humans, published in Spanish, English, French and Portuguese were selected. Those articles that did not treat respiratory signs and <br/>symptoms with propolis were excluded.<br/>Results: A total of 6 articles were chosen according to previously established criteria.<br/>Conclusions: Including propolis as a treatment resulted in a faster than usual resolution of respiratory pathologies. Propolis positively influences the healing of coughs, sore throats, dysphonia, excess mucus production or nasal obstruction. None <br/>of the studies reported adverse events to propolis treatment. |
