| Summary, etc. | Los enfermos críticos suelen desnutrirse y perder masa muscular a lo largo de su proceso de enfermedad (incluso recibido terapia nutricional) debido al enorme grado de estrés que soportan, acompañado de un gran hipercatabolismo. Las últimas teorías inciden en la importancia del intestino como vía preferencial de nutrición en este tipo de pacientes, ya que además de absorber y digerir nutrientes desempeña un importante rol de barrera a las bacterias y sus toxinas. Por ello la nutrición enteral debe ser la primera opción a considerar cuando debemos nutrir a un paciente en estado crítico por vía artificial. |

| Summary, etc. | Critically ill patients tend to become malnourished and lose muscle mass throughout their disease process (even receiving nutritional therapy) due to the enormous degree of stress they endure, accompanied by a great hypercatabolism. The latest theories affect the importance of the intestine as a preferential route of nutrition in this type of patients, since in addition to absorbing and digesting nutrients it plays an important role as a barrier to bacteria and their toxins. For this reason, enteral nutrition should be the first option to consider when artificially feeding a critically ill patient. |
