Summary, etc.
520 8# - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Recent evidence points to emotions and physiological sleep as two modulatory factors of declarative memory, especially when it comes to retrieving contextual information related to a past event. However, it remains undisclosed if the emotional load that accompanies an event is itself sufficient, or if, like events devoid of affective load, they need the subsequent sleep period for their stabilization and consolidation in the neural networks that Underlie this type of memory.
The present study evaluates the effect of sleep deprivation on memory for stimuli with and without emotional load, using the know / remember paradigm. Sleep deprivation selectively decreased the memory of neutral images and with low emotional arousal, without altering the recovery of negative images or with high emotional arousal. Since the dream seems to protect declarative memory from possible interference, it is possible that the degree of differentiation acquired by negative images during encoding is sufficient to protect them from subsequent interference. From this theoretical perspective, sleep and emotions seem to critically influence the memory of past events, so that one would do so fundamentally through the hippocampus (dream) and the other through the amygdala (emotions).
