| Summary, etc. | Existe un interés creciente por el campo de la “nursing advocacy” o abogacía enfermera. La necesidad de abogar por un paciente surge cuando éste no tiene la suficiente fuerza o autonomía para pedir ayuda, protegerse o intervenir en su beneficio y necesita de alguien que lo haga por él.<br/>Los ancianos son uno de los grupos más vulnerables de nuestra sociedad y presentan una necesidad mayor de que se abogue por ellos. Sin embargo, se han creado dudas sobre si corresponde a la profesión enfermera ejercer este papel de abogado de los pacientes.<br/>En este artículo se explora el concepto de “nursing advocacy” y se analiza cómo los ancianos podrían ser beneficiados por ello. Asimismo, se valorarán las dificultades que la profesión enfermera encuentra al tratar de abogar o defender a los pacientes y se dan posibles soluciones para que este nuevo campo de acción tome cuerpo y lugar en la práctica enfermera. |

| Summary, etc. | There is growing interest in the field of “Nursing advocacy”. The need to advocate for a patient emerges when the patient<br/>does not have sufficient strength or autonomy to ask for help, to protect him or herself, or to intervene in his or her<br/>benefit and needs someone to do it on his or her behalf.<br/>The elderly is one of the most vulnerable groups in our society and have a greater need for someone to advocate for<br/>them. However, doubts have been raised on whether it is up to the nurse to play this role of advocacy for the patients.<br/>This paper explores the concept of “Nursing advocacy” and analyses how elderly people could benefit from this advocacy<br/>role. The difficulties encountered by the nurse when advocating or defending patients are also evaluated and possible solutions provided, so that this new field of action is rapidly introduced and finds its place in nursing practice. |
