Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. |
Introduction: Neck and low back pain is a common problem that affects globally military pilots, especially those who fly in fighter jets or helicopters.
Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of cervical and lumbar pain experienced by aircrews (pilots, mission operators and flight engineers) of the Spanish Air Force. This prevalence of pain was compared with the amount of flight hours, type of aircraft, individual role of the crew member during the flight, physical activity and sex (men or women).
Materials and method: In order to answer the proposed objectives, a transversal, observational and descriptive study was carried out in two different Wings of Torrejón Air Base. Specifically, fifty-nine volunteers assigned to 43rd and 47th Air Forces Group participated in the study during the period between october and march 2018th. These participants filled two questionnaires (Neck Disability Index and Oswestry Disability index -ODI) and a visual analogue scale. In addition, it was carried out a case of a physiotherapy treatment applied to a pilot with cervical pain.
Results: It was obtained that the prevalence of post-flight pain during the last week was 49.2%. Besides this, 40.7%, 18.6% and 47.5% of participants reported to experience cervical, dorsal and low back pain, respectively. The means obtained through the NDI and the ODI were 20,678% and 21,684% respectively. Regarding the VAS, the means were 1,864 for the neck pain and 1,839 for low back pain.
Conclusions: Nevertheless, this investigation did not find any statistical significance (p≥0.05) between the prevalence of pain and the amount of flight hours, aircraft type, role of the crew member during the flight, physical activity and sex. This result were opposed to the results found in other studies. The treatment for the case report it was not effective. |
