Debido al aumento de la esperanza de vida se hace visible un incremento de la<br/>dependencia, vulnerabilidad y necesidad de atención en las personas mayores. El<br/>envejecimiento plantea un desafío y un reto para la sociedad, convirtiendo a las<br/>residencias de mayores en uno de los recursos más empleados para la atención a<br/>los mayores grados de dependencia. Objetivos: El presente estudio plantea la<br/>descripción de los sentimientos de personas mayores institucionalizadas,<br/>dependientes físicamente y sin alteración cognitiva, a través de su visión sobre la<br/>dependencia y la institucionalización, así como ahondar en sus experiencias vitales y<br/>en las dimensiones de calidad de vida.<br/>Metodología: Se ha realizado un estudio descriptivo transversal, a través de<br/>entrevistas en profundidad, a un grupo de 20 personas institucionalizadas en dos<br/>residencias de la zona norte de la Comunidad de Madrid, seleccionadas en base a<br/>su grado de dependencia (según Índice Barthel) y la ausencia de deterioro cognitivo<br/>(evaluado con Mini Examen Cognoscitivo).<br/>Resultados: Los participantes describen con intensidad las vivencias de su pasado<br/>independiente, en contraposición a su vida actual. La dependencia es reconocida<br/>como la principal motivación para el ingreso, asumiendo éste con resignación y<br/>exculpando a sus familiares. A través de los indicadores de calidad de vida afloran<br/>sentimientos y emociones que reflejan una vida dependiente, con escasos<br/>acontecimientos que rompan la rutina, considerando positiva la atención que<br/>reciben.<br/>Conclusiones: las aportaciones revelan sentimientos de frustración y conformismo<br/>ante la necesidad reconocida de vivir institucionalizados. A su vez, destaca la<br/>violencia con la que viven los cuidados más íntimos y la dificultad para establecer<br/>relaciones sociales profundas con el resto de residentes. |

Due to the increase in life expectancy there is an increase in dependency,<br/>vulnerability and the need for care on elderly people. Aging is a challenge in itself<br/>and also a challenge for society, making homes for the elderly one of the common<br/>resources to take care of the highest cases of dependency. Objectives: The following<br/>study describes the feelings of institutionalized elderly people, physically dependent<br/>and without cognitive alteration, focusing on their views about dependency and<br/>institutionalization, as well as highlighting their life experiences and quality of life.<br/>Methodology: A descriptive study was carried out, based on depth interviews, with a<br/>group of 20 institutionalized people in two residences located in the northern area of<br/>the Community of Madrid, selected based on their degree of dependency (according<br/>to the Barthel Index) and the absence of cognitive impairment (evaluated with Mini<br/>Cognitive Exam).<br/>Results: The participants describe thoroughly their experiences of their independent<br/>past, versus their current life. Their own dependency is recognized as the main<br/>motivation to join homes for the elderly, assuming this with resignation and without<br/>blaming their families. Through their quality of life indicators, their feelings and<br/>emotions reflect a dependent life with very few events that break the routine,<br/>considering the attention they receive positive.<br/>Conclusions: The contributions from participants reveal feelings of frustration and<br/>conformity to the need to live institutionalized. At the same time, it highlights how<br/>violated they feel when they receive intimate care and the difficulty in establishing<br/>deep social relationships with the rest of the residents. |
